We are proud to announce that the 2025 African Peering and Interconnection Forum (AfPIF) will take place from 19 to 21 August in Lagos, Nigeria at The Lagos Continental Hotel!

This three day event is the region’s premier Internet industry conference dedicated to network interconnection, peering, and traffic exchange. It brings together a wide range of stakeholders including network operators, IXPs, regulators, content providers, data centers, and transit providers to explore the key challenges and opportunities in Africa’s Internet ecosystem.

We are proud to announce that the 2024 African Peering and Interconnection Forum (AfPIF) will take place from 20 to 22 August in Kinshasa, DR Congo.

AfPIF is an annual Internet industry event that aims to address the key interconnection, peering, and traffic exchange opportunities and challenges on the continent. It provides participants with global and regional insights for maximising opportunities that will help grow Internet infrastructure and services in Africa.

AfPIF is organised by the African IXP Association in partnership with the Internet Society. This year’s event is hosted by ISPA-DRC with sponsorship from Liquid Intelligent Technologies, ARPTC, Open Access Data Centres, and many others.

The first democratically elected board of directors took office on August 21st 2023 at the first Annual General Meeting of the association which took place on the same day in Accra, Ghana.

The election included 13 candidates and 19 IXPs voting from 18 countries. Nine seats were available. Voting began on August 7th, 2023 and closed on August 17th, 2023.

The election was conducted using the Zeus Electronic Voting system with support and oversight from the European Internet Exchange Association; the Latin American and Caribbean Internet Exchange Association; and the Internet Society. Representatives from these organizations acted as election trustees and released a signed statement to certify the election results. A copy of this statement is attached below.

The first elected members, along with their respective terms, are as follows:

  • Kyle Spencer (3 years)
  • Muhammed Rudman (3 years)
  • Jane R Coffin (3 years)
  • Jean-Francis Ahanda (2 years)
  • Frank Habicht (2 years)
  • Darwin Da Costa (2 years)
  • Lawakilia Wilfried Drabo (1 year)
  • Edrich de Lange (1 year)
  • Caglar Dabanoglu (1 year)

Note that staggered terms were allocated based on the number of votes each candidate received as required by our Articles of Association for the inaugural election.

The first board of directors, known as the Transitional Board, was appointed as part of a legal requirement to register the association. The Transitional Board's mandate was to manage post-registration administrative tasks and organize a democratic board election. The Transitional Board included the following people:

  • Nico Tshintiu (Chair)
  • Kyle Spencer (Executive Director)
  • Michuki Mwangi
  • Grace Mwikarago
  • Frank Habicht
  • Hasting Tjipueja

These appointees signed, notarized, and submitted copies of the Articles of Association to the Rwanda Development Board and the company was formally registered on June 30th, 2023. Note that Fearghas McKay also supported the process but was not a signatory to the Articles of Association.
